Much of the nation tuned into the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris this past Wednesday. Some, surely, were there to watch American history be made, where others may have been more motivated by the celebrity guest performers. Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez, and Garth Brooks all lent their talents to the ceremony, and it's since come to light that one of them did another a major favor behind the scenes. In an effusively grateful tweet, Garth Brooks revealed that Lady Gaga and her team "saved" him on Inauguration Day. Inauguration Day brought out some serious looks.
From the Biden granddaughters' monochromatic ensembles to Bernie Sanders' meme-able mittens and parka, the inauguration ceremony gave us a lot of fashion and style choices to talk about. And while Lady Gaga displayed her signature sense of drama in an elaborate braid, voluminous skirt, and gigantic gold dove brooch, Brooks also stayed true to his image, performing "Amazing Grace" in jeans, a black blazer, and a black cowboy hat. But it sounds like Brooks needed some last-minute help from Gaga's "glam squad."
In a tweet from later that day, Brooks wrote to Lady Gaga with a compliment and a thank you.
"You were fabulous today and everyday," the tweet reads. "A national treasure. Please tell Frederick and Miss Sarah thank you for me! They saved a cowboy today. Oh, and tell Miss Sarah to hug her momma for me! love, g"
People decoded the tweet, pointing out that Brooks is referring to Frederic Aspiras, Gaga's hairstylist, and Sarah Tanno, her makeup artist. So it would seem that the country star got some last-minute touchups from them, certainly with the "Shallow" singer's blessing. (And—we're guessing—it sounds like Tanno told Brooks that her mother is a fan.) For more entertainment news sent right to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter.
Ahead of the event, Brooks told fans that his presence wasn't about politics.
Brooks' invitation to perform came from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, and in a virtual press conference regarding his acceptance, the Republican country singer explained that he didn't see his presence as "a political statement" but "a statement of unity."
"This is an honor for me to get to serve. I got to serve the Clinton Administration with the Concert of the Century, the Bush Administration with Points of Light," he said, as reported by People. "It's one of the things that, if my family is around, no matter who the president-elect is, it's an honor to be asked."
He was also asked to perform at Donald Trump's inauguration in 2017 but declined due to touring commitments. For Brooks and other famous granddads, check out 36 Celebrities You Didn't Know Were Grandparents.
Lady Gaga also shared a message of unity with her fans before her performance.
Lady Gaga, who sang the National Anthem at the inauguration, had supported Biden on the campaign trail. Nonetheless, she made it clear in a tweet that she was looking at the moment in a broader context.
"My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly," she wrote. "I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land. Respectfully and kindly, Lady Gaga." For more on the star, check out Lady Gaga Opens Up About Former Fiancé: "I Loved Him So Much."
